Barry & Helen
Barry and Helen met in 2001 and were married in April 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. They moved permanently to Beer in 2016 after retiring from busy corporate lives as a Treasury Manager and Vice President of People. Barry worked all his life for Hambros Bank, subsequently acquired by Societe Generale, and Helen had a varied career in HR – from Eurostar to Burger King to Virgin Media.
As a couple, they’re a Carioca and a Cockney, with Barry born in Rio and Helen within sight of Big Ben, although both holidayed in Seaton and Beer as youngsters. They have three children, Richard, Alexandra and Joshua who have fled the nest. Helen’s Mum, Brenda, is often found pottering around the cottages. They’ve firmly established themselves in Beer village whether it be volunteering for charity events or enjoying the active Beer social scene.
Constructed in the early 1900s, the main house at Garlands was built for the local doctor, who both lived and worked here. The downstairs portion of The Boat Shed was originally used as the practice surgery, whilst the doctor’s assistant lived upstairs.
The house was designed by famous architect and resident of Beer, David Carr, a member of the renowned Carr’s Biscuits family.
